NYC Councilwoman introduces resolution condemning Alden Global Capital union-busting, urging the predatory hedge fund to reach a deal with Daily News workers

New York City Councilmember Carmen De La Rosa introduces a resolution calling out the destructive practices of Daily News owner Alden Global Capital and strongly urging the predatory hedge fund to reach a contract deal with the newspaper’s unionized workers.

NEW YORK – City Councilwoman Carmen De La Rosa introduced a resolution at the Aug. 14 council meeting calling out the destructive practices of Daily News owner Alden Global Capital and strongly urging the predatory hedge fund to reach a contract deal with the workers’ union.

“Resolved, the Council condemns the predatory practices of Alden Global Capital threatening the future of local news in New York City; and be it further resolved, the Council urges Alden Global Capital to negotiate in good faith and reach a fair contract without further delay,” the resolution says.

This resolution is the strongest rebuke of Alden’s predatory practices since the hedge fund first began gobbling up newspapers across the country. It is also the only New York City Council resolution in recent memory to specifically call for the city’s support of a media union.

“De La Rosa and numerous other top city leaders came to our Defend the Daily News Rally in recognition of how important a fair contract at the Daily News is to NYC journalism,” said Susan DeCarava, president of The NewsGuild of New York. “The only thing standing in the way of that contract is Alden Global Capital. It’s way past time for Alden to recognize that we are not backing down.”
