New York City leaders to issue strongest rebuke yet of Daily News owner Alden Global Capital
07/09/2025 NEW YORK – City Councilwoman Carmen De La Rosa will introduce a resolution calling out the destructive practices of Daily News owner Alden Global Capital and strongly urging the predatory hedge fund to reach a contract deal with the newspaper’s union.
The resolution, which is expected to be on the agenda for the August stated meeting, will be the strongest rebuke by elected officials of the hedge fund since Alden Global Capital began to take over newspapers across the country.
De La Rosa, a Democrat who represents District 10 and is chair of the New York City Council Committee on Civil Service and Labor, is scheduled to attend Monday’s “Defend the Daily News” rally outside City Hall, just before the next slated City Council meeting. The rally will be hosted by the Daily News Union and The NewsGuild of New York, the labor union representing nearly 6,000 media workers.
Surrounded by Daily News Union and NYGuild members as well as city labor leaders, De La Rosa will share the details of the resolution.
“Resolved, the Council condemns the predatory practices of Alden Global Capital threatening the future of local news in New York City; and be it further resolved, the Council urges Alden Global Capital to negotiate in good faith and reach a fair contract without further delay,” the resolution says.
For three years, the Daily News Union has been fighting for a first contract that would ensure:
Fair wage floors and guaranteed annual cost-of-living raises amidst skyrocketing inflation in one of the nation’s most expensive cities
Job protections and fair benefits for part-time workers
Job-security provisions that protect their work from being subcontracted permanently
Maintaining standard benefits like time off, sick time, parental leave and 401(k) match
“This City Council resolution supports the vital role New York’s Hometown Paper, The Daily News, has in keeping informed all the people whose work makes New York City great,” said Susan DeCarava, president of The NewsGuild of New York. “Our Daily News Union members uphold the democracy of our city with every story they report, every elected official they question, every cultural event they review, every sports game they analyze, and in all the countless other ways they reflect the lifeblood of our great city. Daily News reporters deserve a fair contract, just like New Yorkers deserve a great local newspaper. You can’t have one without the other.”
